I can tell you from experience there is nothing quite like the first time you have a lucid dream.  It gets even better too; as once you have done it you can do it more adeptly the next time.  You don’t even need to wait until the next night to have a lucid dream again, because you take yourself from one dream to another; or into one dream from another if you will.  I’m fortunate in that I haven’t had to practice and have always been able to enter dreams, alter them, remember them and even interact during them.

Lucid dreaming is having the ability to experience your dream; you’re dreaming while sleeping and while awake if that makes sense.  Different parts of your consciousness are active when you have a lucid dream and that makes the difference between a regular dream and a lucid one.  Better yet, when you are aware that you’re dreaming you can then control the dream.  You can begin practicing this tonight by becoming aware of your sleep cycles and how you feel through them. You may want to consider a binaural audio track and headphones to help you get started as well (Brainwave Entertainment has these).  Good luck and happy dreaming; make the most of it.
